Trey Hendrickson Expresses Discontent Over Bengals Contract Talks
Trey Hendrickson, a standout defensive end for the Cincinnati Bengals, has openly shared his frustration over stalled contract discussions with the team. This follows recent comments from Bengals’ executive vice president Katie Blackburn about his contract status.
Ongoing Contract Impasse
On Tuesday, Blackburn suggested that Hendrickson should accept the team’s terms. “I think he should be happy at certain rates that maybe he doesn’t think he’d be happy at,” she said during the NFL’s annual meeting. Hendrickson, in response, expressed his dissatisfaction on Wednesday during “The Pat McAfee Show.” He pointed out that communication with the team had been unsatisfactory, especially since recent talks did not involve his agent, Harold Lewis.
With 17.5 sacks across two seasons, Hendrickson has proven highly effective on the field. His current deal ranks him within the top ten edge rushers, with an annual salary of $21 million according to OverTheCap.com. However, he’s looking for a reassessment to match the increasing market for defensive ends.
Unmet Expectations
Hendrickson, soon entering free agency, referenced earlier promises from the Bengals to revisit his contract this year. Despite assurances made during February’s NFL scouting combine, Hendrickson reported inconsistent communication. While keen to continue his tenure with the Bengals, he stressed the necessity for contract adjustments that reflect rising market values.
Hendrickson noted, “The market value is going up like it did for wide receivers last year. I’ve been basically asking for the same thing every year, to be solidified as a Cincinnati Bengal for life.”
Concerns Over Team Priorities
Recently, the Bengals have secured long-term, lucrative contracts for wide receivers Ja’Marr Chase and Tee Higgins. Although Hendrickson congratulated them, he questioned the delay in addressing his contract situation. “Respect to Ja’Marr and Tee,” he stated. “But regarding my situation, it would have been nice to know, like, ‘Hey we’re going to put you in the queue.’”
With organized team activities approaching, Hendrickson’s status with the Bengals remains uncertain. While hopeful for a resolution, which might include becoming a team captain after Sam Hubbard’s retirement, Hendrickson acknowledged the possibility of exploring other opportunities if needed.
