A significant issue has emerged in MMA circles, where UFC competitor Jeff Molina finds himself suspended by Nevada’s Athletic Commission for insider betting. During a Las Vegas hearing this week, it came to light that Molina placed hefty bets on a UFC fight in November 2022, exploiting confidential details regarding a fighter’s injury. Nevada Deputy Attorney General Matthew Feeley revealed that Molina’s bets were tied to the bout between Darrick Minner and Shayilan Nuerdanbieke, a match noted for unusual betting activities.
Extent of Conduct and Suspensions
The NAC suspended 27-year-old Molina back in January 2023 for not reporting the injury he was privy to. Molina, acknowledging his actions, accepted a suspension lasting three years, set to conclude this November. Although he sent a letter to the NAC to express his views about the circumstances, he was absent from the recent hearing. Efforts to reach him for further comments were fruitless.
Darrick Minner, who was also involved through failure to report an injury, received a suspension in December 2022. His suspension is due to expire on March 29, as stated by Feeley. Minner continues to assert that his actions were above board before the fight. Nevertheless, the UFC ended its relationship with Minner in December 2022, following his first-round TKO loss to Nuerdanbieke.
Wider Implications and Additional Suspensions
Compounding the situation, James Krause, coach to both Molina and Minner, has found himself suspended as well. Krause’s activities have been examined after suggestions surfaced that he collaborated with an offshore sportsbook.
The UFC has adopted a decisive approach, instructing fighters to sever ties with Krause or face restrictions from participating in UFC events. Although the organization withheld comments for ESPN, it’s evident the incident has sparked a thorough evaluation of betting standards for those connected with mixed martial arts.
