FIFA Introduces Ref Cams at Club World Cup
This summer’s FIFA Club World Cup in the United States will feature an innovative technological leap. For the first time, referees will wear body cameras, known as “Ref Cams,” designed to enrich the spectator’s experience. According to Pierluigi Collina, Chairman of FIFA’s Referees Committee, Ref Cams will allow viewers to witness the game from unprecedented angles. These devices, integrated into the referee’s headset, will provide live footage during pivotal moments like goals, fouls, and tackles, aiming to deliver insights into the referee’s perspective during key match decisions.
This innovation is built on successful trials in grassroots football across England, where body cameras were instrumental in reducing referee abuse. The International Football Association Board (IFAB) has endorsed these trials, signaling a shift in how officiating is perceived by fans and referees.
Enhanced Training and Viewing
Referee body cameras bring a novel viewing angle and serve a dual purpose. FIFA expects the footage will become a crucial tool for referee training. Collina emphasized that video reviews from the referee’s viewpoint will enhance coaching, enabling a detailed analysis of referee decisions and their rationale.
This idea has seen practical application, notably in the Bundesliga, where a “RefCam” was used during a match between Eintracht Frankfurt and VfL Wolfsburg. This provided essential insights into VAR operations and decision-making processes. The success at the grassroots level has paved the way for further testing in professional contexts, culminating in this summer’s Club World Cup.

Referees slated for the upcoming tournament recently convened in Zurich for a preparatory seminar.
