In Buffalo, NY, the Buffalo Bills tackle a setback as recent defensive additions, Larry Ogunjobi and Michael Hoecht, face a six-game suspension for performance-enhancing drug (PED) violations at the onset of the NFL season.
General Manager Brandon Beane shared that both Ogunjobi, a defensive tackle, and Hoecht, a defensive end, breached the NFL’s PED guidelines. This development impacts the Bills’ plans to strengthen their defensive line. Beane remarked on the situation: “Having two guys in this situation isn’t ideal, yet both have clean off-field records.” The situation underscores the challenges players face with supplements and adhering to the league’s strict policies.
Ogunjobi, cut by the Pittsburgh Steelers last Monday for cap relief, tested positive during his one-year contract negotiations with Buffalo. He accepted responsibility and expressed regret, saying, “I take full accountability. It was a mistake. An accident. And I accept my punishment.” The Bills were unaware of his results before the signing, creating a timing challenge with his contract.
Contracts and Consequences
The Bills were informed of Hoecht’s situation before his contract, but Ogunjobi’s case took them by surprise. Sharing his experience, Ogunjobi admitted to a lapse in caution with supplements, trusting a long-time trainer too deeply. The team had to adjust swiftly since other potential replacements had secured contracts elsewhere.
Despite the difficulties, Beane stressed Ogunjobi’s integrity and noted his accomplishments, including being Pittsburgh’s Walter Payton Man of the Year honoree. The organization amended its contract strategies to address this obstacle.

Hoecht, aware of his suspension due to high testosterone levels, embraced responsibility, aiming to turn his situation into a learning prospect for others. “It was a mistake, and it’s fully my responsibility,” Hoecht stated, intending to motivate himself through this experience.
Moving Forward
Both players will join the offseason program and training camp, reentering the fold post-suspension. The Bills plan to treat these suspensions like player injuries, potentially starting some team members on injured reserve.
As the team copes with altered lineup plans, Beane stresses the importance of trust and proactive communication to handle the offseason and upcoming games effectively without Ogunjobi and Hoecht.
